Vision for the Recreation and Parks District

Access
Ensuring everyone has easy access the recreation opportunities that will enable them and their families to thrive, at a price they can afford

Inclusion
The Eden Area is home to residents who speak 50 different languages and whose cultures and identities span the globe and the spectrum. While play is a universal language, relaxation, celebration, dance, sport, and other activities that define play are as diverse as our community.  The District's offerings need to reflect that diversity.

Recovery
Parks and programs are key components of ensuring that our community is not only able to recover from the pandemic, but also to heal long standing mental and physical health needs prevalent in the Eden Area.

PROVEN TRACK RECORD
As a City Council Member I've been proud to lead efforts that have netted tangible results. For example:
  • Unfunded liabilities in the City of Hayward have decreased by nearly 50%
  • Homelessness has declined by over 20%
  • Hayward is one of the greenest municipalities in the world
  • Streets and roads are at their best state of repair in over a decade with a solid plan to continue improvements throughout the city.
  • Improved transparency and inclusion for community members in policy development
  • Hundreds of new affordable housing units for existing Hayward residents
  • 4 new grocery stores
  • # affordable units (rent/own)
  • Safe routes to schools and for seniors
As a State and Nationally Certified Recreation Therapist and Community Volunteer in the Eden Area since 1996:
  • Strengthened urban agriculture and the circular food economy
  • Developed and lead programs for all ages and abilities as well as intergenerational curricula
  • Created a network of public and private organizations that provided 11,000 backpacks to students in need throughout Alameda County over 7 years
  • Mentored about a dozen interns during my 8 years in office and other dozen  through the four certified Recreation Therapy internship programs I established.
  • Graduated with honors from San Francisco State University and CSU in Hayward for my bachelor's in Recreation Therapy and master's in healthcare administration respectively.
  • Past President Bay Area Therapeutic Recreation Association, Former Student Board Member California Parks and Recreation Association
For 30 years, I've empowered youth, adults, and seniors to speak out about the family, homelessness, and healthcare issues that affected their lives and created opportunities for them to be part of the solution.
